MY R2-D2 PROJECT
BUILDING AN ASTROMECH!
R2 "FINISHED" AT CIV
What R2 currently looks like. Picture taken at CIV in LA 2007.
I weathered him in the motel room.
Don Bies said good job, but weathering "needed some drips". Thanks uncle Don!

R2 at MegaCon, Orlando Florida, February 2007
Front skins glued and some details mounted. First time out at a con, had a great time running him around for the fans.
Funny, even though he was not completed, I got a lot of fans wanting to take pictures anyway.
Special thanks to Jim Quinlan for putting this meet together.

R2 IS "BORN"
R2-D2 on
January 11th 2007 after my first R/C controlled test drive. This was about
3:00 AM! He's naked, but R2 worked great! I'm using a Futaba 9CAP
radio and a 8 channel receiver.
You will never forget the first
time you take the controls and watch him take off!
Special thanks to fellow Florida builders Keith and Carolyn for helping out
into the early morning hours, could not have done it without you!
Foot
drives/mounts were my own design and used 100 watt scooter motors and
Big Lots 6" rubber tires. Front ball casters have now been removed and
feet have been fixed into 3 leg mode.

The Southern Group FORUM
as of 09/03/07 is SHUT DOWN for now. Too many outsiders trying to
get in and got spammed.
We will just use our Southern Builders Group mailing list for meeting
announcements, etc.
I finally got hooked into
building my own "fully" operational R2-D2
droid.
This has been a dream of mine since I saw the first Star Wars move back
in 1977, which by the way is officially called "A
New Hope" or "ANH" which is episode IV. I discovered the R2 builders group on the internet
back in March of 2005 and the rest is, well... history. Have been
collecting parts for over a 2 years and has been a long and drawn out
progress, but well worth the effort!. However, this will be
my 'final' project as R2 will never be actually completed, constantly upgrading and fixing :)
Click on one of the links below to look at my R2-D2's building
progress, some how-to's, parts collection, some local R2 Builders
meetings photo's, Meeting Kenny Baker at the FX show, and Star Wars
Weekends and now CIV!!! Also just added (08/20/07) my ANH lightsaber build link using real Graflex Flash Housings.
- My R2 Build and Progress -- Pictures
and information on my current R2-D2 project and construction. Hopefully this can
help fellow builders ;-)
- My R2 Parts Collection
-- Pictures and
information on some of the parts to build R2-D2. Could not have
done it without the
fellow builders and suppliers, you guy's have been great! Kudos's
to Jerry Green (JAG), Kelly, Azman, Keith, Ron, Wayne, Ryan, Guy, Scott, and
many
others!
- First Real Gig = Broken Center Ankle!
-- My first gig, my nephews wedding. Well R2 was "dancing"
with the guest and the center ankle sheered off and he took a dive!
Some pictures and my planned fix for this.
- Building a Luke Skywalker ANH Graflex Lightsaber
-- What would a ANH R2 be without his ANH lightsaber? R2 did not
really "use" it, till he launched it to Luke off the sail barge.
Of course the saber launched was not "ANH", that's what I'm
building anyway. This link will take you to my ANH Luke Skywalker
lightsaber build page.
- Robart Hinges - How to Use!!!
-- Pictures and a little info on how to use the Robart hinges in your
R2. Most information came from fellow Florida builder, Keith Bellavia.
- CIV Pictures!!!
-- Finally got to my first real Con. Daniel D. hauled my R2
out to LA and back. Had a blast, meeting all the other builders and
running R2 around for all the fans. Also got some celebrity
pictures! Whoo Hoo!!! Thanks to all involved!
- My R2-D2 is "Born" : First Test Drive : 01/20/07
-- R2 finally on three legs and under full R/C control.
Power applied at 3:00 AM, 01/20/07. Initial foot drive
testing and a little crash!
- FX Show Orlando FL : Meet Kenny Baker!
-- Finally heard Kenny Baker was going to be in town, so I headed
out to the show with Keith and Carolyn to meet Kennyh and
have some parts signed! Real nice chap...
- Southern Builders Meeting : 08/26/06
-- Our first "real" Souther Builders meeting. This time we had about
20+ builders show up. We had 2 operational R2's, a C3PO and a
Jawa. And of course tables of parts. Appreciate all that came out, had a great time!
- Southern Builders "Mini Meet"
: 04/14/06
-- Here are some pictures from our meeting on
Friday, April 14th, 2006. Ten builders showed up to talk about
R2, droids and to share parts and idea's. Thanks to Brett Landon
for bringing the fiberglass body/skins and skirt.
- Southern Builders "Mini Meet" :
02/17/06 -- Here are some pictures from our meeting on
Friday, February 17, 2006. Four Florida builders got together to
share ideas, parts and R2 building! In attendance was Keith and
Carolyn Bellavia, Doug Dixon and of course your's truly. Sorry for some that didn't make it, we tried. Don't
worry, there will be plenty more... plus planning the BIG ONE in the
near future.
- Star Wars Weekends 2006 -- Star
Wars weekends 2006. Keith and Carolyn were kind enough to get me
out to my first event. Thanks for showing me the ropes!
